UNDERSTANDING HUMAN AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE with Tricia MacKenzie, 16 hour intensive workshop

Understanding human and artificial intelligence

HALF PRICE WITHOUT PROGRAMMING SECTIONS! USE CODE: 'NOCODE'

EVERY TUESDAY IN MAY, 5PM-9PM.

The internet and computers have fundamentally changed what it means to be human. This class explores the intersection of human and artificial intelligence (AI). It covers the foundational concepts of both neuroscience and AI, starting from the origin of AI and building up to an in depth discussion of innovations at the bleeding edge. This course covers the concepts and math required to understand AI being implemented by tech companies and created in academia, from the perspective of how advances in AI relate to advances in neuroscience.

This course has an optional second section for programming that teaches the Julia language, a new language designed for AI. Julia allows AI innovations to be quickly translated into products that run at real time. It is accessible, dynamically-typed and interactive, yet fast and designed for high performance like C.

No previous programming experience in Julia is needed or expected. Feel free to come with a project or idea that you want to work on throughout the class.

HALF PRICE WITHOUT PROGRAMMING SECTIONS! USE CODE: 'NOCODE'

Tricia MacKenzie, PhD, works at the intersection of neuroscience and artificial intelligence. She received her PhD from NYU, where she applied Systems Biology to biological neural networks, and her B.S. from University of Washington Neurobiology. She is currently CEO of an AI company, called Ailaire. She was a finalist for a Creative Capital Award for proposing startups are an emerging field of art. She was once almost expelled from her doctoral program for using AI to render labs in her field redundant as a possible solution to sexism in academia.

Session one

Intro to AI + neuroscience

Understanding how neurons communicate and how to predict these computations. Deriving the Nernst potential from the second law of thermodynamics. Using the second law of thermodynamics to conceptualize artificial and biological intelligence

(programming section)

How do we play with this? Intro to the Julia language. Julia is super fast, efficient and optimized for advancing AI

Session two

Artificial and biological neural networks

Cortical biological networks and how they can be organized into functional circuits. Artificial networks are based on early discoveries on how neurons learn (Hebbian plasticity). Intro to probability

(programming section)

How do we play with this? Linear algebra in Julia. Introduction to the bayesian brain. Julia's machine and deep learning library, which includes TensorFlow and a computer vision library

Session three

How biological and artificial environments make predictions

How cortical networks in visual and auditory systems perceive our environment. How AI makes predictions

(programming section)

How do we play with this?

In depth explanation of probability and uncertainty (Bayesian networks, hidden Markov models, Kalmann filters, game theory) in Julia

Session four

How our brains and AI learn

Synaptic plasticity in biological neural networks. Learning in artificial neural networks (Convolutional, recurrent artificial neural networks, deep learning). Introduction to how to interface biological neural networks with AI

(programming section)

How do we play with this?

Combining multiple techniques and integrating AI into real products in real time. Bleeding edge techniques available in Julia

Mudit Goyal: What makes a successful entrepreneur?

IS AN INDIVIDUAL'S INNOVATIVE MINDSET LEVEL AND POWER TO INNOVATE MEASURABLE, AND HOW?

MUDIT GOYAL FROM UC BERKELEY WILL BE PRESENTING HIS RESEARCH - PLEASE JOIN US TO LEARN FROM HIM AND GIVE HIM FEEDBACK. THIS WEDNESDAY AT NODE!

Opening the doors to non-members at 6. Join us for a glass of wine before the presentation begins

Presentation begins at 7pm.

With the advancement of Big Data technologies, and the creation of new, open source Machine Learning and Data Science tools, we now have new methods and approaches to obtain quantitative entrepreneurship research results. This approach benefits from a seemingly inexhaustible source of information, i.e. data. In this paper, we apply data science techniques from UC Berkeley’s Data-X framework to research socio-economic characteristics and traits, related to successful entrepreneurs, and their link to early stage venture success. Such techniques include the use of web scraping scripts, data cleaning, the creation of data pipelines, and visualization using open source Python libraries (e.g. Scikit-learn, Pandas) as well as other tools commonly used in the Machine Learning development stack. This paper offers two types of results of the performed quantitative study, that is in the intersection between Machine Learning and Entrepreneurship Research

(Fig 1.). First that the Machine Learning development stack offers powerful tools to produce entrepreneurship research results, and this might be a new paradigm in this field of research. Second, we can now quantitatively verify from public data sources that, contrary to popular belief, a successful entrepreneur is not a young, college drop-out that had a genius idea in their dorm room. Instead, the most predictive trait of entrepreneurial success is the work experience of the founder, i.e., the number of years the founder has been employed before starting their company. Optimally they will have been employed for 10 to 12 years.

The Berkeley Innovation Index (BII) is both an open research concept, and a global collaboration project born out of interdisciplinary research by UC Berkeley faculty. In cooperation with industry professionals, BII has been developed to offer simple yet powerful ways to measure something never before measurable – an individual's innovative mindset level, and their power to innovate.

How to be Human: A Fireside Chat- Doug Rushkoff & Seth Goldstein

Please join us for a deep dive on what it means to be human in the age of surveillance capitalism and how we can create real communities (like Node!) to foster humanity in the age of machine intelligence.

Doug Rushkoff is author of the new book Team Human. Team Human is a manifesto—a fiery distillation of preeminent digital theorist Douglas Rushkoff’s most urgent thoughts on civilization and human nature. In one hundred lean and incisive statements, he argues that we are essentially social creatures, and that we achieve our greatest aspirations when we work together—not as individuals.

"A provocative, exciting, and important rallying cry to reassert our human spirit of community and teamwork.”—Walter Isaacson

There will be signed books by Doug himself available at Node after his talk at Node. We ask members/attendees to contribute $20 if they would like a signed book.

CoralConnects at Node!

It's that time of the month again to make meaningful connections in the blockchain space with #CoralConnects

Be led by Coral (heycoral.com) in an intentional, curated mastermind session where you will make personal connections and leave with meaningful, tailored introductions to the people you need to connect with most for your business!

This facilitated exercise will allow you to meet amazing humans working on real projects in blockchain- a space for you to speak to your current challenges and needs/ asks as well as offer up your strengths/ ideas/ connections and ways to support!

It's a win-win.

Past events with this network have yielded big results for participants including fundraising deals, partnerships, and more!

Past feedback:

"I joined Coral Connection’s first event and found that it was very useful for connecting deeply with people within the space! Often times we go to networking events and do not get the chance to meet everyone and understand what they are working on, but Coral Connections was different. We all got an opportunity to explain what we’re working on, what we need and what we can offer. I heard everyone else’s response as well.”

"Coral Connections is an interesting new way to connect blockchain innovators from a diverse set of background. What's most appealing for me was how highly curated the connections were and the rigorous follow up from the team. I met some amazing folks - highly recommend.”

We'll bring wine and feel free to bring some to contribute to the group as well!

We look forward to seeing you there following Silicon Valley Blockchain Society's November event.

Guests welcome who are passionate about blockchain and you know fit the ethos of this community :)
